The Lionfish Project
Lionfish are native to the Indian and Pacific oceans. In the past few years, they have spread up the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. and throughout the Caribbean as a highly invasive species. Bermuda was the first Atlantic region to implement a culling strategy to combat these gluttonous invaders, and now others are beginning to use Bermuda's program as a model to effectively tackle a new generation of our shared ocean predators. The island acted quickly putting its program in place before the lionfish population exploded. Its small 200 square mile reef platform is heavily patrolled by divers and fishermen.
A collaboration among the BAMZ, BZS, and the ACP, the Lionfish Project examines the relationships among invasions affecting the East Coast of the U.S., the Bahamas, and Bermuda.
